Scope Numbers Explained: What Every Shooter Should Know

Image
When you look at figures like  3‑9x40  or  4‑16x50 , you’re seeing what are known as  scope numbers . Understanding these details is essential for picking the right rifle scope that fits your shooting needs. What Do Scope Numbers Mean? The first part— 3‑9x  in  3‑9x40 —refers to  magnification . A  variable power scope  like this allows you to zoom between 3× and 9×. By contrast, a  fixed power scope  such as  4x32  offers a single, fixed magnification—simplifying use and often reducing weight. The Role of Objective Lens Size The second number, for instance  40  in  3‑9x40 , indicates the  objective lens  diameter in millimeters. A larger objective lens collects more light, improving brightness and clarity— especially in low-light situations . However, bigger lenses can increase overall weight and raise the scope height on your rifle. Why Eye Relief, Field of View & Exit Pupil Matter Asid...

As an optical aiming device, a red dot sight like  vortex optic  sits atop a firearm for a glowing red (sometimes amber or green) reticle. That way, it beats conventional iron sights where you must align two parts, front and rear. If you are a newbie hunter vetting to pick a red dot, you’re looking at the right place. Keep reading! What Is MOA? First-time red dot buyers, hear! MOA stands for Minutes of Angle. It’s a number you’ll find under the product description, like in a  Vortex red dot . And it’s pretty baffling to decide which MOA is the right one. Let’s simplify things.  Reflex Sights These are the standard red dot sights that hunters widely use. It’s a standard optic that uses a single plane or a glass tube to keep things simple. It has a small LED placed at the rear and pointed at the front lens. When aiming at a target, this sends the LED back to a hunter’s eye.  Prismatic Sights  Prismatic sights are compact and shorter options in co...

Swarovski kicks off 2024 with the AX Visio – the world’s first AI-assisted binocular. The  Swarovski AX Visio  ( A ugmented E x perience) utilizes artificial intelligence to assist in the identification of over 9000 birds, butterflies, dragonflies, mammals and other wildlife with the push of a button. These groundbreaking field glasses were  designed with input from award-winning industrial designer Marc Newson, the same designer that helped create Swarovski’s renowned  CL Curio  binocular line. While in the development process, Marc Newson took design cues from CL Curio, evident in the extruded aluminum bridge as well as the focusing wheel detail. Newson was also inspired by Swarovski’s Habich series, the profile of which was specifically designed to house the porro prism arrangement. In addition to its bird/wildlife identification abilities, the AX Visio also offers a wide array of other practical functions. ...
